collected her last weekend. The black wheels are Nogins, were on for MOT purposes then back to the whites... Which i now dont like. but will keep for trackday hacking.

Replaced a intermitant #1 cylinder ignition lead yesterday which has the intermittant stutter GONE. and i can confirm it goes like it souinds now. The S4 is much quicker in a straight line but A to B there is little in it.

Wheel balancing and alignment next.

update::

After a few conversations with Nogin establish the front shockers should be changed out, so he sourced some Bilstien units for me for under £100 brand new, delighted! Also bought some knock sensors, #2 was reading as "sporadiac", replaced an arcing lead with a spare, front track rod adjusters really needed replaced, had the tracking done as well last week by an Audi indy up here and I am pleased to say the car is runnign as sweet as a nut. Revs long and hard with no hiccups in power. The only thing i changed in the interim was to put the 034 injectors in place as i did wonder if they contributed to the hiccup in power. What i will say is they make it a lot smoother, there used to be a notable change in power delivery around 4000rpm, thats a lot smoother now and it revs faster above 4000 as well. Sounds bloody great on the DTM back box as well, proper rasp.

So I booked in for a trackscotland trackday last weekend at Knockhill. A four hour session, I took instruction with Rory Bryant as well and had two sessions with him. There was some mad metal on the track and the 90 didnt embarass itself, it helped that it was wet. I removed the back seats for some weight saving, hardly worth it they must weigh, 10kgs?!

But got to push the car to its limit and beyond. Natural understeer was much more obvious but i did have a brown pants moment with the instructor hitting the first bend of the main straight hitting a patch of oil a cossie in front of me decided to spew out his sump, 70-80mph opposite lock, other opposite lock, other opposite lock, really thought we were going into the tyre wall but after 3-4 changes of direction we were going straight again... really sh*t myself. Got a well saved from the intructor, maybe i dont realise just how much i am used to driving old quattros?

I had a royal battle on 3-4 sessions with a mk1 civic typeR. I was pushing him through the bends but lost a few car lengths by the end of the straight, and then right back up his trupet on the bends. Was easily gapping the stripped and caged XR2/3's. But got thrashed by a nissan almera i then found out was pumping out 500bhp, very stealthy car and sounded nuts. But the Radical was something else it passed me like i was parked on the straights, i could only laugh.

I drove the car 160 miles there and 160 miles back, the brakes were getting hot i restricted myself to 10 laps at the most with a 15 minute rest then back out again. Did 66 laps and utterly loved it. A 19 year old road car did that.





My first ever trackday, something i have wanted to do for a long time. Very glad i did it, learned a lot being able to push the car well beyond what you can on a public road, with 15m space its a lot easier. A great experience i recommend for anyone!

Just read the entire thread from start to finish. Great story istoo and I am very glad you decided to stick with the original plan. I often think I'm mad for keeping my 20v going. Poor girl is tatty these days but still fun Smile Anyway, your car looks great, especially on the track!

Any update to the story or is it -The End- ?

Cheers! There is an update to the story, a big life change for me, I sold the S4 last weekend as me and family are all movign to Kuala Lumpur in 4 weeks time! But i am goign to keep the 90 in storage here A for a car to drive when i get back, B i wouldnt get a lot for it anyway and C insuring it keeps our no cliams going.

But i did do this.

Saturday was cheerio day for the S4 as it heads pastures new. Met the new owners brother at knockhill just as hibby arrived, changed paperwork and said goodbye to the mighty battle bus.

My mechanic pal came shotgun with me, he is a VAG veteran and somewhat kamakazee. But what a bloody laugh all day. Hibby went for a passenger run with my mate driving and came away a bit scared! With hibby's wheels on the car looked OK, but the 45 profile was rubbing on hard cornering so i have already ordered 2 more kumho ecsta sports for a new set of smaller tyres all round.

On track? The weather was typical knockhill, horizontal wind, a few degrees above zero and wet as hell. Snow was on the hills around us.

Well the 90 was on form, the brake fluid, oil and tracking were all checked before we went on track. Wee hole in exhausted welded up and go go go! The first 10 laps was me driving really greasy, i mean really greasy... instantly felt a lot slippier than it did in november in the same conditions. different tyres all round didnt help, but it made it much more fun!

Had major understeer at the hairpin but was inducing very big oversteer into duffis (off the main striaght) coming out the hairpin and at clarks the back corner) After about 90 minutes the heavens opened up and the rain really started and never let up. a few cars came off the track, no prangs, after speaking to the folk afterwards it seems nearly everyone came off.

after the rain, my coipilot drove with me shotgun, the old M5 came out of the pits in the distance, game on Smile gaining on it lap after lap copilot then went into duffis, first corner downhill after the striaght way way too fast, as i said erm bit fast, yeah i know... listening to the screethc of tyres as we are facing the cars coming down the hill... oops. Bl;ack flag for copilit and thats his day over.

So last session was me driving went on at 3:25 and thought i would do 10 laps then call it a day. The black maestro was out, yes maestro. could i outrun him on the straight, could i f**k. gained through the corners till hard on his arse then he would gap us on the striaght. Took me 17 laps but we got past, it was so wet that the brakes were doing OK, i got past the M5 as well but was getting braver and braver and drivfting all the way through the first 2 corners and the exit of the chicane. On lap 20 i hit the chicane full throttle in 3rd about 70 and caught the paint ont he exit whilst going sideways, caught it as i did with previous laps then it did the quattro thing of going opposite lock one way to opposite lock the other way in the space of 0.1 seconds. hands crossed over as no matter how much opposite lock i gave it we were going off, throiugh the gravel trap backwards and stopped short by about 5 foot from the tyre wall... PHEW! Got loads of big thumbs up and waves from the nice peopl passing by! Back onto the track and drive to the pits back off the racing line. Got the game over from the marschals, but expected that., but never felt too bad as we were the 8th folk to be told that.

In the paddock, spoke to the maestro owner who was about five, it was stripped out on coilovers, trackday tyres and had a rover 2.0 tii lump and some extensive breathing work. So not bad, but we were consistantly fast through the twisties and with our pitcrew times of 78secs i beleive thats quite respectable in the wet.

There was a brand spanking new 911 turbo and the owner wasnt holding back either. the B5 S4 owner was a decent chap also (he has a nissan GTR as well) the two B7 RS4's sounded ace! But the mini was my favourite, a 1.6 VTI kncking out about 180bhp. what a noise it made!

i have no idea how many laps we did i reckon it must have been close to 100 between the two of us. Best fun i have had in a longn long time, not taking it too seriously but i was trying. confidence up a lot more from last time as I was getting some regularly 4 wheel drifts through the long corners, although the hairpin is very hard, had oversteer in the first hour then nothing but horrendous understeer for the rest of the afternoon. Learned an awful lot about how quick a 20 year old quattro can go in the wet, its aq hell of a car and mountains of fun. Highly recommended...

thanks nogin and co for helping put the 90 on the map. We entertained a lot of the folk at carlube with our "commitment". Was also good banter with the classic BMW lot.

I could buy a faster car but then it gets a bit serious, the 90 is awesome fun, really is. The 911t chap came up and shook my hand afterwards said we were entertaining to follow!

nice pics. Said you wouldn't go far wrong with a 90 for fun and cheapness, even if it did take a while to get it sorted (nobody's fault).

Good luck with the move- not as if it's a few miles down the road...!

A great write-up, thanks for sharing it with us.
I've done some belting bike trackdays at Knockhill a good few years ago, but would love to do one in a decent car too. It goes to show that you don't need to spend big money to have big fun! Cool

oh they are an enthusiasts car no shadow of a doubt there! Pounds per smile is pretty damned good i must admit, they are one of the cars audi got right, nicely underrated and recommended to anyone.

Thanks Al, it was a right hoot, i reckon with some work when i get back i am aiming for sub 70sec laps, but a must for anyone who thinks they are a good driver, brings you on a lot more, learned a lot there under tuition and practising drifts, corrections at 70+mph makes you both sh*t yourself and smile all at the same time Smile
