In replacing the front wheel bearings I've managed to accidentally dismantle one ABS sensor and totally destroy another. I've sourced a original, used replacement for the destroyed one on ebay, but the seller doesn't have any more. The only other used sensor is going for silly money.
What's the chances of the dismantled one being reassembled and it working? All I've done is pull the sensor electronics out of the steel sleeve, which is still stuck in the bearing housing. The other sensor came out in bits.
Assuming that I've knackered both of them, are the cheap pattern sensors on ebay any good?
Anyone got any intact spare sensors they'd be willing to sell? |

I'm breaking a 2.8Q at the moment, I'll see if i can get one out without breaking it. |

If it doesn't look like it'll come out, leave it in the bearing housing, as that way anyone needing a bearing housing can have the whole assembly, rather than mess around wrecking ABS sensors themselves. Keeping a pair of struts with good bearings in as spares would be wise IMO, pressing bearings in and out can be challenging.
I've sourced replacement sensors now anyway, but thanks for the thought. |

Interesting, I had my wheel bearings done last week at a garage and now the abs grinds for a couple mins then the ABS AUS light comes on, grinding then stops. They said it is because the that the wheels are now aligned and the ABS needs 'resetting'. They cannot do that it seems. Reading this it sounds like bullcrap!
Sorry for slight necro thread. |

Could be a couple of issue, one of the most likely is rust flakes stuck to the end of the sensor (it's magnetic). If they're sensible they wouldn't interfered with the sensors, which means the only way to get it all cleaned out in there is to either pull the sensor (and probably kill it) or pop the driveshaft out so you can access the sensor from the inside of the bearing carrier - you don't need to pull the bearing thankfully as the sensor ring is on the CV joint end.
Your garage is talking bull about the sensor being 'aligned' and needing resetting. They were sloppy in cleaning up the housings before reassembling, thus the rust.
Is it one side or both? VAG Com should give you an idea either though error codes or looking at the individual wheel speeds when rolling. |

Thanks for reply. Its one side. Every time I start and drive it does it.
Like you say I'll pull the drive shaft rather than the sensor, sounds like a death sentence otherwise! |
