Newbie looking for diagnostic set up

I have a 2002 A4 and would like advice on what equipment i need to self diagnose faults?? Is it a difficult thing to do? OK i realise a laptop is first on the list but i assume a cable and software is required. Exactly what is needed,where to buy(ebay?)and approx cost would be a great help. cheers.

because its 2002 any generic obd2 reader will read your fault codes. mac tools do one at around £50 for basic and £90 for one that will cancel service light etc. they come with software to diagnose fault codes and i just wish they would work on my 96 a8 Sad
