Hi
had a rather nasty total brake failure the other day , all fluid came out of the vehicle and rear brakes failed , leaving only handbrake working any sense
The problem seems to be with 2 alloy brake restrictors fitted only to the advants, these are on the rear brake lines and mine had rotted to a condition where they had failed , they seem to only be fitted on certain years
They are £120 and are on back order , so my car is now running without these untill they are back in , brake bias is a bit wrong at present
Scary stuff and not fitted on the saloon A6`s
Anyone else seen this ? |

Could be the same but does not look like it , the parts arrive that 120 was wrong the incorrect part , now got the correct items they were 35 notes for both restrictors that go on the brake lines , will post pic when i get home
Looks very similar but not quite the same from the pic i can see |

Another one to report.
Was driving the car normally last night - no issues. This morning, on start-up, the car check was doing it's nut - beeping and flashing the red brake warning. Checked the fluid, which was really low, but not empty. Odd I thought as I checked it visually on Sunday. Topped it up and tried the brakes - straight to floor . Oh dear I said (or something similar).
Quick look underneath showed a puddle under the OSR wheel. With the wheel off this proved to be coming from the joint between caliper hose and hard line, and when I went to give it a wiggle it just fell apart as I touched it .
Checked the other side which wasn't leaking and looked quite innocent, but still fell apart when wiggled .
So I count myself extremely fortunate to have had only a driveway failure - could have been MUCH worse.
Took me some time to realise that there was this extra part screwed into the end of the pipe as there was so little left (and I have obviously not been paying proper attention to the forum ). Have now replaced all four flexihoses on the rear, without this restrictor for now as not available locally.
I'm confused as to the purpose of it - a simple orifice can't act as a proportioning valve - all it can do is slow the speed of response of the rear brakes - maybe acts as a damper in an ABS situation?
It is a pretty small hole....
In any case, I'm quite amazed that Audi thought it was ok to put a small, safety critical, pressure-containing part in a mud-trapping cage made of aluminium next to a road wheel where it is bound to be surrounded by salty mud. What's wrong with plated steel or even stainless steel? And £ 35 for those - I think I might leave them out - unless someone can come up with a convincing argument as to how they improve the car? Also possible they are available from elsewhere in a less soluble material......
Another thought. My car supposedly has dual circuit brakes. The leak was in one circuit only and the fluid reservoir was not empty. Nevertheless - ALL hydraulic braking was lost. This I expect from the single circuit brakes on my old Triumphs but surely should not have been the case on the Audi?
Maybe this should be a sticky - It's certainly a MAJOR safety issue.....
Check yours today!
Cheers

As a run a small car component business in my spare time i can manufacture a batch in stainless steel
I bought mine and had not fitted them because they were alloy and thought i could make these better
Would anyone be interested in a set ,its normally easier to make a large number to keep the price down |

Been here too. I was heading down a steep hill when mine went and I quickly go a lesson on how to stop an automatic with no brakes.
I knew nothing about a restrictor so I replaced the flexi and the copper pipe and have noticed no difference.

You don't live in Yeovil by any chance do you? If you don't then we can add another victim of this problem to the list who is looking to have some restrictors made in something more durable as one of my machine shop contacts has been approached for this very thing. If you do live in Yeovil then it's probably you....
