Wondering if this is a feature, or a fault?

fill the tank to the 2nd click, hop in and the dial reads 3/4 it might rise to about 7/8 but never has it sat on full. Even after consuming about 70litres of diesel.

So am I actually filling the tank fully?

Or is the gauge misreading?

The computer also seems to be very undecided about the miles remaining too, can vary by up to 100 in a very short space of time..

Do I need to get the soldering iron out again?

My fuel gauge is the same, never reaches the top so have all my other Audis. The computer works out your range iirc based on the last 3km driving style and mpg, harsh accelerationcan see the range drop in seconds.

I saw it rise to the full line once when I filled up in France last summer. Apart from that, it always goes to 3/4.

The least from 80ish litres was around 500 miles and the most was just over 800 on the motorways in Spain/France. It seems that battering around at circa 90mph with a boot full of rubbish gives better economy than 70mph on the British roads...

topped up last night, with between 150 and 200miles to go (according to the computer). Put 60 litres in. Reset the odo which was reading 760 miles.

Thats about 56mpg. wow. Computer recons I've done about 45mpg. Something a bit odd there..

I don't think 800 miles from a slush-box is too bad (should anyone know the capacity of the tank precisely, feel free to work out the actual mpg) It's just a shame I can't replicate it on our overcrowded, poorly maintained roads.

I recall on the trip through France to Spain, that my other half's turn to fill up came in Andorra, where 81 litres of diesel cost her 53 Euros! That tank also passed the 800 mile mark Very Happy

Hi
Mine did the same when i got it but running vegetable oil in a low percentage mix ( about 10% ) for a while fixed it , i think vegetable oil cleans stuff quite well , so i never had to take the sensor out , i have had this problem on other vag vehicles and ended up replacing the part as the tracks were worn on the level sensor

Anybody got a fix for this? I've checked the sender and it seems OK, nice smooth change of resisitance as it goes up and down. I've even have the guage apart and I can't see anything wrong wth that either. I'm getting 2.5v to the gauge when the tank is full, does this sound right?

can you not "calibrate" the gauges when full through the binnacle?

Seem to remember the similar-looking gauge on my 90 had some adjustment available - can't remember if that was from the front or rear (at least 10 years since I last saw it).

My A6 Avant (AEL) does go pretty much to the full line if I get it right full but takes a few miles to get there for some reason. I have known 800 mile tanks..... but not many......

Nick

I've had the clocks apart and the only adjustment there is to set when the needle sits when empty. I've tried tweeking this but it still does not go past 3/4s and now does not go to empty, so I'm going to put it back to as it was.
