Hi, I have a 2005 Audi 3 litre tdi quatro.the problem is rough idling and white smoke from exhaust after idling.I have just had new timing chains fitted along with new valve lifters and fuel injectors. The garage seems to think that there is a software problem after the car has been stood for weeks without the battery connected.Myself, I think there is a problem with the timing, the car was driving perfectly before the rebuild, any suggestions please. PAUL

White smoke is usually watervapour, have a sniff you can normally tell.
Water vapour could indicate water in the diesel. Maybe a fuel filter change could help?
Worst case if its water vapour is head gasket but you would get a mayonaise type oil water mix on the oil filler cap.

Hello Paul,
Probably you are right, most likely there is problem with timing but timing on this car is not piece of cake and it will cost a lot. Because there is something like this http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/14388/s4v8-2.jpg
And maybe you are interested in selling it in this state? If so how much?

Hi Livemech, my car is still at the garage undergoing tests on the new injectors. A specialist has reported that 2 of the injectors are unbalanced, so lets see what happens. Regarding selling the car in its present condition I would have to consider at least getting back what I have spent on it so far which is nearly 5000 pounds.Cheers Paul54

Just thought I would let you all know that my smoke issues have been cured, after much searching and lots of cash the problem has been located. It turned out to be 2 wires corroded in the ECU which controlled 4 and 5 cylinder fuel injectors, hence causing wrong fuel timing.
