Hi all,
I am Jonah and will be requiring some advice on buying a used a4 … but will start with my recent car history as I am gutted I have sold my two toyotas as I now have a 5 month old daughter so need something more practical but as reliable as my old toyotas!
Firstly my daily driver, toyota celica vvti 140, modified with toyota trd kit , suspension and strut brace, injen induction, etc etc
And my pride and joy toyota supra TT 413bhp full du luck kit, trd suspension the works…
So I have now sold both and am after a good reliable audi a4 to be used for work during the week and family car at the weekend…I have a budget of max 4k so looking at 2002 - 04.
I have just started my search and have seen some very nice 1.8t (163) with s line kits with around 80k for 3.5-4k on Internet.
Is there anything I need to look for specifically on these models ? Anything major need replacing at 80k?
Any advice much appreciated
Thanks Jonah |

Yeah gutted about the supra but I am not 25 anymore
I think the s4's are out of my price range and too expensive to run as I will be doing 10k a year for work alone.
I suppose if the oil pump is an issue it would have failed by 80k but I will check this on viewing. Thanks |

try to avoid a car that's been on "long life" or "variable" servicing- the oil issue is due to pick up pipes getting blocked and starving the top end of the engine- common issue on many different VAG engines.....
Welcome to the site- I'd be gutted about the Supra as well.....
Don't discount the 2.0 tdi if available in your price range- there are 2 variants fitted to the A3 (not sure if both were fitted to the A4)- "normal" is 140bhp, "fun" (while still economical!) is the 170bhp.
Oh, and I'd suggest you go for a manual box, if possible.... |

Welcome
As Andy says the 1.8T is infamous for suffering from a blocked oil pick up which will starve the top end of oil and wreck it. This is caused by sludge building up from the longlife servicing, as well as mixing the wrong types of oil. It's not a problem if you're aware of it, most people tend to budget £200 or so to drop the sump and fit a new oil pick up.
I can't recommend a 2.0TDi on your budget. The earlier ones (and some of the later ones!) have had all sorts of issue's with weak injectors and oil pump drives, if you wanted a diesel the 1.9TDi is the one to go for all day long. |

Thanks for the advice guys I have not been looking at diesel petrol only ATM.
I have driven a few 2l and nothing to write home about … but have taken out 2 1.8t sport 6 speed manuals and loved them a beautiful ride and quite nippy (190bhp) really impressed … I am also going to view a 3l Quattro it looks lovely my only concern is the mileage 137k so i need to make sure service history is on order!
Question: what is long life service? Is that a service carried out every 19k rather than every year????
Thanks |

That's it yes, I use AVS (Audi Variable Servicing) which for me works out every 9k. If I had the 1.8T then I'd swap the oil and filter every 6k.
I wouldn't let that mileage worry you if the service history is right, I'd be budgeting for a cambelt change though. |
