When i realised i needed to repair the boot looms i really wanted to see some pictures.

I have done it myself now and have taken the time to put a load of images of my boot loom repair in my gallery for everyones info - i will update comments to show instructions when i have more time.

cost me no more than £20 plus my time

hope they help - i am by no means an expert but if anyone needs some pointers i will be glad to help

Cheers

Dave

Cheers Dave;

if you do the write up when you get chance, we can help link the images in, and make it a "sticky" post. Very Happy

are there wires for switches in both looms

Stoney

best to repair both looms as if there is a problem with one (fractured wires) it will prob be the same on the other side as the wires will be same age and suffer same amount of opening and closing

i did both sides of mine as they had both gone (see pics in my gallery if not already viewed)

once i had done the repair (and put a new fuse in the fusebox!!!) - all has been well since

so i guess the answer to your qeustion is yes both side looms go to the switches

because the wires are fractured they can sometimes make a closed circuit so the system will work but if you open/close the boot then the circuit can be open, just from the movement of the wires so the mechanism wont work - very frustrating!!! but as you have no doubt seen it is not a difficult fix adn many people have effected their own reapir as the Audi stealers will want to lighten your wallet to the tune of £300-400 to fit the same looms that will eventually break again!!!

time for more maintenence i thnk!!!!

good luck

Dave

roof fuse is in the fuse box just under the windscreen - the legend on the fuse box lid will tell you which one it is - 25amp required - if you are getting some movment on you mechanism then your fuse is prob ok
with mine i was so focussed on the probs with boot that i did not even think to look there till mush later and i got a mech friend of mine to give me some help - DOH!!!!

Hi

A month or so ago I had trouble with the roof compartment not opening via the door pillar switch.

When I pressed the switch a light on the dash board said that my boot lid wasnt closed/locked when it was.

It turned out that I had a "fractured" wire on the driver's side of the boot lid and via a previous post I was griven a great tip for continuity testing wires !

If you place a sewing pin through the outer sheath and into the core of each wire at a high point of the strut wires and another one low down (on the same wire) you can then do a simple continuity test if the wire is broken.

In my Cabbie (1999) I have the same wiring as that shown in the picture and the white/yellow lead is the lead which goes to the boot lock mechanism and detects that the boot is closed to allow the roof compartment to open.

My wire was broken and once repaired my lid now releases every time !

Wasnt sure if the naming of the wire was of use to any one

Rgds

Brett

When the 90s loom went south it was rebuilt with hi flex silicon insulated cable I had kicking around. It can be had from lots of places cheaply enough though Smile

When I had my Cabby, I did the same. Bought the looms from VAG parts and fitted it myself, no issues really. Easy job Wink

those of you looking for the gallery- the module is no longer active- incompatible with the newer versions of php that the site uses....

I´ll see if I can get the images (don´t hold your breath) and link them in directly....
