Hi!
How long does it take to change the gearbox oil on a audi 80 series 3? I have had some high quotes from garages!

Isn't it supposed to be a sealed for life unit, but I supposed if is nice knowing it's all done, especially if you could put a bit of slick 50 or something in it! Getting the plug out is the easy bit if you have a 4 post lift, you don't even need to take the plastic undertray off, but I'm not sure whether it's as easy as drop the old oil out and put new stuff in. You'd have to find the place the oil goes back in too. iirc, on my B4, the plug is like a large allen key socket but has a post coming out of the centre, so the tool would look like an allen key with a hole drilled in the centre. I'm guessing its a fairly specialised removal tool!

Or just knock the centre pin out of the plug with a small drift or chisel, thus removing the need for a specialist tool, should be around a 20mm allen (hex) head.

Refilling is done by the removal of the plug in the side of the box either a square socket affair or a 15mm plug. You will need a long tube and lots of oil, or just buy the gearbox oil with the spout/tube fitted to the bottle.

Awkward but do-able...just.

It's not difficult - especially for a garage with a ramp / lift.

Takes about 10 -20 mins to get the oil out, providing the drain and fill plugs can be undone.

Filling takes about another 10 mins or so.

I'd love to know what the quotes were. It takes me about 1hr tops using the pit in the garage.

The oil itself is quite expensive

I would remove the fill plug before the drain plug, just in case.

+1 - You'd be annoyed if you couldn't get the fill plug out to refill an empty 'box!

it is a 17mm allen key to undo the fill and drain plugs on my CQ20V. it is not actually an allen key as such tho - more of an allen socket. 17mm hex on one end goes in the plug and use either a spanner on that or the other end which i think is 13mm.

i got my socket bit years and years ago back in the day i used to have polo's / sciroccos - conveniently VAG group seemed to use the same plugs on all their gearboxes and the rear diff on my CQ! Smile

sorted.

Redline MT 90 is good oil to use. Well I hope so anyway. I've got some at home waiting to go into my 90q but I'm out of the country until May so it will have to wait. DO NOT use Audi's own brand oil as it absolute dogs pooh in our cars. There is no grade on the bottle so you have no idea what it is. Even the boneheads at Audi don't know. MT 90 is a GL-4 oil which is what you want. Apparently it has had some good write ups and is recommended by 20V.org. I got mine from Demon Tweeks.

It is a 17mm allen key you need or 17mm hex plug remover. And make sure you oil is warm when you drain it. It makes it a lot easier.

i did an oil change on my coupe this morning, and actually wasted a lot of time beforehand...i nearly emptied the gearbox by mistake! Embarassed (late night last night)

save yourself £190 - it's that easy you can almost do it by accident!

Jess.

Potentially silly question, but since the diff is integral with the box, shouldn't you use a GL5 oil, not a GL4?

Hi everyone!
So what is the correct gearbox oil? In my audi handbook it says G50 for gearbox and diff! But what is G50 oil? Audi's own make?

G50 is the Audi number for the gearbox oil.

You need a GL4 spec oil for the gearbox

You need to use a GL-4 oil. Use a GL-5 and you could get all sorts of problems.

Just some extra information on this having dropped GL5 into my box, but fortunately not driven a mile in it... shortest life of an oil ever!

keep filling until it's just below the fill plug.

Normally about 2 litres comes out.

Top tip - do not sniff the old oil. it really does honk something rotten

i've got an old hoody that i wear at the workshop in the winter, and everytime it goes in the tumble drier it fills the house with that smell, must've been washed a thousand times since it got covered, so, don't spill it on your clothes.

Last weekend I changed the transmission oil on my Audi 80 B4/2.0 16v ACE. I heeded all the advice from this and other threads but somehow the gearshift has got more notchy and easy to crunch 2nd gear when cold without double declutch. I filled it with Fuchs Titan Sintopoid LS SAE 75w/90. It is GL4, GL5, G50,G51 compatible. I did notice my wheels spinning whilst on axel stands and in neutral. I am considering a GL4 spec but should I also be thinking of another viscosity than 75w/90?
