Hi Audifans
Just joined the forum as I have recently become the extremely proud owner of a 1993 2.3e Cabriolet. Its got an manual roof, leather trim and still on original rims. Its got 108k miles on the clock with mostly full service history and new cambelt. It is in red (not sure what the colour is called) but has been resprayed at some point in the last few years. There are a few bits to sort out in time: 1) Front Headlight Unit works but lens is cracked 2) Rear panel is cracked 3) Temp Guage in main instrument panel and addition cluster has packed up 4) Electric Windows now don't work from the door switches (only from hood operation) 5) The car cuts out but only when the engine is at idle and only occasionally. I may be looking for a few tips to sort these out in the future but for now, I am just going to enjoy roof down motoring to the sound of a 5 cylinder scream. I will try and share some pictures.

Welcome. Just about everything you list is a cheap fix and there's details here on how to sort. As for the electrics a couple of spring washers will sort the temp gauge (probably!) and the windows are likely a dry joint on a relay box under the dash (fix also on here somewhere, not as scary to sort as it sounds!).

Cutting out is either an idle control valve (notorious on v6's, not sure about 5 pots) or a vacuum leak somewhere.

Rear lens is about £50+ for a good one.

Front light, provided it's not got projectors can be had for buttons from about any old cab/coupe.

Believe it or not the projector type front lens can still be sourced from dealers for just over £70. Before I found this out I had bought a pair off fleabay for £180 with a grin on my face thinking I had a bargain. Then I thought I would entertain myself further and phone the dealer to compare prices. Total price from Lomond Audi including a new gasket seal was £72.65 Part nos are: 895941116E (glass) and 895941119B (gasket/seal). angry4 Following the usual part number rules I guess the code for the passenger side glass would be 895941115E (last part number is always odd for a N/S passenger part). Needless to say I promptly cancelled the fleabay ripoff transaction!

Seriously? Last time I bought a headlight after someone crashed into me it was £180 for a unit! Are they cheaper to buy in parts? I got an Audi 80 that's begging for projectors Smile

Afaik dealers were usually asking 5/600+ per full unit as well, never mind 2nd hand! But yeah the lens can be bought much cheaper if you have the unit to go with it. Shame the older type standard units can't just be covered with the projector lens itself, they are buttons and means a projector unit could be built for under £100 and look like new..I've got a unit in the shed that I need to dig out and check what type it is, if it is the new type I'm gonna be on the blower to lomond audi again for another lens! The one I bought for mine was in August 2012 though - hopefully the price is the same if they still have them.

Just noticed..the OP's car is a K plate - it will definitely not have the ellipsoid lamps as standard. Pretty sure by looking at the pics it has the standard hella units fitted. Straight and easy swap for an upgraded pair though!

Evening All - thanks for the advice so far; its really useful.

Need some guidance.

Had the roof down all day (manual roof) but the button on the door to release the under-hood compartment hasn't worked when I came to pull the hood up so I've had to pull up the hood manually. I tried the usual different cominations of central locking with boot locked and unlocked but no change. Any ideas or suggestions to help my simple non-technical mind?

ps - great website and awesome forum

May sound daft, but are you trying to release the storage compartment locks with the car in gear or with the ignition off? If you are following the usual rules for opening the storage area it is possible that your V53 boot motor microswitch has a break in its' line with the roof ECU which is stopping it from opening. Although being a cab it could be any number of things! (Difficult to pinpoint roof faults without at least a vagcom code pull). Is the roof dash light flashing when you try to pop the locks? I'm not 100% about the manual roof, but I'll dig out my manual tomorrow night when I get the chance to remind myself of the manual hood release procedure. Got an early start tomorrow and won't be available till late tomorrow so apologies in advance for any late replies!

Sorted it and feel a right dork as well. I had a sports bag in the book but the strap had fallen under the boot lock so the car thought my boot was open! Panic Over!
