Hi I hope someone on here can help me. Around 4 months ago on the day on my cars MOT i noticed it was overheating (temp rising to around 110) and then suddenly jumping back down to normal (bang on 90). I checked & topped up coolant etc and ran the engine with the coolant cap off to rid any possible airlocks. I sat "revving" the engine quite hard and it didnt overheat again. It passed its MOT etc and everything was fine. However every now and then it would show the temp rising and falling randomly but not for very long. It gradually got more & more random, and often i would stop at a shop for example (with the temp showing normal at 90), turn the car off, go inside, come back and when i start the engine it immediately shows its overheating. Then as I drive off the temp goes back to normal. It is currently at its most worrying stage however as it now reads that it is overheating pretty much all the time (after its had time to heat up). Ive noticed that the large fan on the radiator doesnt come on at all. The smaller fan comes on with the air-con but when the car starts overheating the air-con goes off but the small fan continues spinning. I have checked that the coolant is flowing ok, and all the related fuses are fine. Also when the car is overheating (shows around 120) i have felt the pipes and they seem well pressured but not excessively hot as i can still hold my hand on there for a short while? This leads me to think that perhaps it is not overheating at all?? Im finding it all very confusing and am hoping someone here could shed some light on this as i cant afford currently to take it too a garage or to buy multiple parts as a "trial and error" type fix. Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi Pingu, You will have to look at the temp sender for the gauge, the engine thermostat, and the fan temp sender.
