Looks like a misreading fuel gauge I took petrol cap off and bounced up and down on the boot listening for signs of fuel slopping around and nothing heard stuck a can in and alls well....
I wonder if grandson playing in car, stubby little fingers pressing on the "button that shouldn't be touched" would cause the gauge to read 1/4 when empty |

have you not got a low fuel warning in the 80 ?
Anyway - to confirm if you have fuel. jack the car up on the passenger side.
Undo the jubilee clamp holding the fuel feed hose going to the pump. As you undo the clamp, you may get some fuel seepage - have a basin handy.
Obviously removing the hose will result in the entire contents of the tank coming down that hose so be careful.
Make sure you wear eye protection |

It's not a reset button.
It's for calibration. With an empty tank, add 8 litres of fuel. Calibrate the gauge using the button so that the needle just touches the top of the red reserve area of the dial.
Sounds like an ideal time to check this if you have no fuel |

gauge only works with ignition on.
It turns - clockwise to raise it, anti-clockwise to lower it |
