having finally got fed up of my coupe's crap radio reception (fairly new Sony head unit) I decided to have a look at the cause. Upon removing the trim at the back, I found this
so the original co-ax has been snipped, and there is another cable in place - but with a powered cable attached as well - anyone have any idea what for, (is there a reception amplifier somewhere?) and any ideas on why its not working properly? Is this a common thing? Here are the new wires

The coupe has an amplified aerial. It is located in the bottom of the aerial itself |

ok, so there's power to the aerial, 0v when turned off and 10.5v when turned on seems odd, but never mind. So I've taken the aerial off, now to pull it apart to find out what's inside |

how disappointing - there are two screws on the underside, but taking them out achieves nothing
doesn't work, and can't get into it to see whats wrong - looks like its a new one to be ordered then... |

Have a look at this thread:
http://www.audifans.net/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3554&highlight=
Just took my amplified aerial base apart. After the two screws, you need to pry the outer off with a screwdriver.... slide the screw driver down between the base and the outer towards the whip aerial screw. Do this all the way round.
(If that makes sense...)
Inside there's a circuit board encased in what looks like filler foam. Hence the need to pry it apart.
Follow the above thread and you may well good radio reception.
It worked for me!!
My amplifier was getting power, but had rusted to death! Works fine without the amplifier now.
Good luck.

cheers Daz, I did try getting into it with a knife but had no joy - will try again with a long thin screwdriver and see if I can open it up. I thought it'd work without the amp, plenty of other cars manage |

took it apart again today, worked round it with a screwdriver, and inside found not much more than some wood-like foam and some rust which was probably a PCB once upon a time...
found somewhere to solder to, bypassed the 'amp' completely, straight to the antenna at the top - and it now works perfectly. I can get stations other than Radio 1, thank christ |

GSF do replacement aerials (base, antenna and cable) for about £12. Quite common this |

yeah, this is a temp fix till I get a new one - can't be arsed running a new cable through though - looks like someone in the past did, and didn't bother removing the old one |

Vagparts will do you a genuine one so that you don't have to rethread the cable |

This is what my Avant amplified antenna looked like. I soldered for a direct pass through. Worked fine, but I thought I could do better and ended up mangling the threads and it became loose and leaky. I went for two amplified ebay antennas which have loosely connected amp or missing a securing bolt. I fear buying anything to rectify it - at least it's not leaking. |
