S4 (100 based) auto: hard clunk selecting reverse

Its a quattro. selecting drive is smooth, I can't even feel the engaging of the box. But selecting reverse is allways causing a more or less severe clunk going seemingly right through the drive train/transfer. at times it was so bad I thought something is braking. I now try to avoid having to reverse as much as possible.
driving is otherwise fine, no transmission noises, no imbalance, takes high speed well (and I mean high speed! did over 140 mph the other day on a german autobahn)
Any ideas??

Stab in the dark would suggest either gearbox mountings, rear diff mounts or possibly g'box oil needing refreshed. Just guessing though so it could be something else.
