okey kokey as most know i have a 85 "2tone 90q" what i want to know is, is the power steering rack on my car interchangable to a non powersteering rack? i believe some of the 80's came without powersteering but not sure how true this is? Embarassed really hope i can get rid of the the damn powersteering as mine has never been right and i have lost all confidence in driving the car hard as the steering feel is awefull Crying or Very sad

all the 80's were non-PAS, the 90 and coupe were all PAS

if you can find one, then the racks are interchangable, but they're not easy to get at by a long way!

Sorry....... I have a 1985 80 Sport sitting in my garage --- with power steering. It was a £400 factory option but it does seem to be very rare !!

You do confirm my understanding tho' that all the Coupes had power steering even the 4 cylinder ones.

Both of mine have had PAS. Only the current one dumps all of the fluid at random times though...

Try widening your search to the VW Passat type 32b?
Same floorpan & running gear as the coupe
Was the low rent brand so didn't come with lots of goodies

Got a full p/s set on the shelf - rack, pump, hoses, reservoir

Having owned a 4 cylinder 80 quattro for 16 months and back to back with the Sport with p/s I cannot imagine why you would wish to drive a non assisted heavier 5 cylinder 90......... Shock
However the 5 cylinder VW Santanas from the mid 1980s had p/s....... mind they are really rare !

Things we do with these old Audis..... I love Overhauling and Wrecks to Riches...... and they just order bits from the local parts store .... for cars that are 40 +years old Mad Crying or Very sad

How great would it be Kingfisher to have all those facilities at hand eh mate.I to am a big fan of those 2 programs. As you say,the parts availability is just un-real.Mind you,i suppose its just like the MGB stuff is here, you can still get anything for those cars, and how old are they now.

the steering feel im getting is awefull there is no feeling as to what the car is doing other than when it goes light, im not and never have been a fan of power steering really other than these new speed sensative units but like anything the more time to develop the better something gets Smile the car will not really be a daily driver anyway and the pump and ps rack are about finished anyway so thought might as well do a manual rack instead Very Happy and i wont need to go to the gym (i dont anyway as im too lazy Laughing )

I must admit I didn't notice toooo much once rolling along but multi storey car parks etc ... definately need the gym training Laughing
Manual racks are often a bit lower geared as well.
