My 2.5TDI AEL is now on 234K and I have a nasty feeling that all is not well in the clutch department. It does all still work and not slipping as yet, but clutch biting point seems variable and often rather high with take up being a bit less smooth than it once was. Also there seems to be more engine speed related vibration than there was especially just above idle speed. Clutch is original factory one - not a bad innings I suppose.

Presumably these things have a DMF? Presumably it costs a kidney and 1/2 a liver?

Is it possible to change the clutch without changing the DMF (assuming the latter is not obviously hanging).

Cheers

Nick

DMF normally start to fail have a rattle about them as the bearing is starting to fall apart, but i have seen a mk4 golf that had very very bad vibration caused the DMF by the DMF being on the way out but the friction plate was still working ok but it was the second plate not concentric with the first it had worn so much , not sure the pedal was effected tho

The DMF is mega expensive on these , sure there was a topic on here with the price , sure it was done by bladerunner , i do see the odd one on ebay in germany

mine is on 396 and original clutch , still waiting for the day it will fail

False economy mate as the worn fly will wear the new clutch out quicker then a pikey picking pockets. I will be doing mine soon and will relace both at same time.......you dont want to pay for a new clutch and fly + 6hours labour again.

if money is tight then PM me and I will price the bits up from work for you.

396k on a clutch is pretty impressive! It's not rattling so hopefully it'll keep going. I would be curious to know what the costs are, but while I'm quite capable of changing it myself (no 6 hour labour charge at least), I'll not be putting £1,200 (say) of parts on an £ 800 car.......

I've heard of people fitting solid flywheels and the relevant matching clutch onto them, but I imagine these are either extremely heavy, spoiling the driving experience, or won't damp the torque pulses sufficiently to protect the transmission?

Will have a poke around for other possible causes of the symptoms (gearbox or engine mount issue maybe) first.

Cheers

Nick

Ive seen solid flywheel coversions that have snapped cranks and driveshafts. also customers who couldnt stand the less refind ride and paid to swap back to DMF.!!

also known peeps weld the flys back up...however I couldnt vouch for the effectivness of this method.

you pays ya money you take ya choice at the end of the day.
