Hi to all you lovely people, I've been lurking on this forum for a couple of months now and have recently picked up my 3rd B4 80, this time a white tdi saloon with full service history up to '09 and I'm the 3rd owner from new Very Happy It does have a few issues such as smoking badly when you floor it and as of today the abs light has come on the dash, this I suspect is due to my buggering around with sensors trying to determine the vss, any hints as to how to sort it?
Will upload some pictures when the weather lets me wash her Confused
Cheers and gone Very Happy

Hi There. ABS wheel sensors are quite delicate once they've been in there a while, have you tried to remove any of them? VAGCOM is your best bet as it'll tell you whats wrong.

The smoking is likely the usual issues, blocked cat, sooted up inlet or a boost leak somewhere. With vagcom you could also check the injection quantity to make sure she's not over fueling.

Cheers

Thanks for the replies chaps, the sensor I unplugged was the multifunction sensor on the gearbox, I suspected I would need to vagcom it and just clear the codes, as for the smoke a boost leak sounds possible as it is whistling, would that just be a loose hose or something a bit more in depth?

The most likely cause would be a split in a hose, quite likely a vac hose. Here's what I found while looking at mine:

Vac hose off the top of the N75 was work half way through, caused mainly by the numpty who put on the intake hose which was about 4" too long and caused the vac hose to rub on boost pipe. This vac hose is £2 per meter so best just to replace it all.

If theres a leak it could be obvious as there's likely a load of black gunge around where it's leaking as in my pic.

Actually, can I ask why you unplugged the sensor on the gearbox? Was it due to juddering?

and since Then the abs light has been on, all I did was unplug it drive it up the road and plug it back in, I'll try cleaning the contacts if I can reach see if that changes anything.

Bit of an update for y'all, after just having a look under the bonnet for anything obvious (mainly vac hoses) i noticed a loose jubilee clip, traced the pipe and it was one off the intercooler, so after tightening that bugger up i seem to have stopped the smoke and there is obviously a power increase:) (never a bad thing huh?) i still have a slight whistle from the turbo so will have a proper look over the christmas break, and hopefully that'll turn something up:)
Cheers and gone
