Hi I'm going to change my glow plugs on my a4 tdi 2.5 1999, what advice do i need in respect of which plugs and are there any rules or tips for removal and fitting. Thanks

After reading some other forums,i don't think ill attempt changing the plugs, stories of snapped snapped plugs in the head freak me out. Ill live with the lame cold start.

Yes, leave 'em alone! If one breaks you'll need to remove the head, and because it's a V6, there's twice as much risk! If you have starting problems, then first thing to do is check the battery condition. In very cold weather I sometimes put the glow plugs on for a double burst, then turn the ignition.

Worst case scenario if you have to remove the plugs, then soak with Duck Oil penetrating release a few days prior to the job. Then get the car to operating temperature before attempting. Wink

Yeah so i have read, the poor cold start is annoying though. The battery is new although at the rate of which i have to wind it in the mornings i guess the battery will soon start to fail as will the starter motor.

If it's starting badly you could try a new coolant temperature sensor.

I changed my glowplugs, I was bricking it after reading the same horror stories but it was fine. I sprayed them each night with WD40 for a week before hand, and was just careful. It improved cold starts no end.

apparently some places soak the glowplug threaded area with coca cola, I suppose the acid maybe helps to dissolve the rust around the threads.
