Finally got round to replacing my rear discs and pads at the weekend. First time for me on the S4 and quite a straightforward job and much the same as per my old S2

Bit alarming how little of the surface of the old discs was being used by the pad– slightly worse nearside than offside, but pretty much the same both sides. Not sure of the cause as everything seemed ok - hopefully the new ones will fare better!

Before

After

What a pain it is tho to get access (or rather a wrench etc) onto the pad carrier bolts! Evil or Very Mad Between the drop link, hub arms and rear ARB its very tight if you’re a doing this at home with the car jacked up rather than on a lift. By the time you get the 8mm allen socket driver on I found I had little head space to fit or move a breaker bar! Fortunately, encountered no real problems and the bolts cracked free without too much resistance.

Next job is to tidy up the guard and get some paint on the calipers!

Calipers look in good condition, are they replacements? Rear brakes are a pain at the best of times. I normally use Lockheed red grease on caliper piston and sliders. The handbrake is also prone to seizing so good opportunity to dismantle and rebuild at a pad and disc change.

Far as I can tell these are the original calipers - I just gave them a bit of a brush up as I didnt have any paint I could use at the time. Looking back through the history I don't think the rear discs have been replaced in 10 years!

Always good to see original parts have been used when you replace them! Cool
