Ok, here are the symptoms of my electrical system:
1. The car is live, even after locking it
2. The fan now runs after the engine is switched off
3. The hazard backlight remains illuminates after locking the car.
4. The park light does not work (it functions like an indicator)
5. Basically everything can be switched on, wipers heaters etc without a key
6. Everything works, and I mean everything
7. ...that said, I haven't managed to get any ecu communication since this happened last saturday.
8. The radio had been acting up
Possible causes:
These events may have led to this mysterious electrical behaviour:
1. I inspected all the fuses (because the radio was not turning on). I found a scorch mark on fuse 18 (rear heater/wiper) but it was still functional, I replaced the 15Amp fuse anyway.
2. We disconnected and reconnected four different car radios, three were defective and a Blaupunkt Verona was still working. My sony head unit had a loose solder in on the circuitboard which explained the intermittent radio functioning. The radio wiring is stock. There is no radio connected to the car at the moment. The fuse for the radio did not blow.
3. In the process of inspecting the wiring the centre part of the dash was removed (vents) Aux switches, vent dials and stereo caddy. It was after the reinstall that we noticed that the lights were illuminated. But I am not 100% sure this didn't happen earlier in the day. To test I removed the aux switch gear to see if the gremlins would stop, but alas no, they persist.
As I explain the details here my thinking seems to target the reinstall of the centre console in particular the are around the vent dials and behind. The other area could be that something came loose at the rear of the fusebox. And or finally it could be ignition switch related? Perhaps I try my other key as I think of it?, but, as I said everything works. My main fear is getting a flat battery.
Any ideas, methods to confirm, diagnose the issue? I have a multimeter.
Thanks! |

After some thought, I realised that there is an alarm LED mounted to one of the aux switches. That is live when locked. That will be my starting point. |

personally i would start with the relays, i'm sure the 80 is famous for one of the ignition related relays.
followed up with the barrel itself, i know i have barrel issues, and i've seen a few barrel related issues as well. |

Yeah, I'd give the lock barrel a check before checking all the wiring etc.
I had problems with my electrics not turning on when the lock was cracked in my B3. The solution was to stop it and restart it. |

I'm not sure if there is a permanent live there but have a look at the wiring at the boot lid. I had some dodgy wiring that caused all sorts of trouble with the dash switches |

Thanks for the advice. Strangely the (temp.) solution was a faulty fuse. But not in the way you would expect! Fuse 18 (15A) was blown, and by replacing it I caused the problem. Officially that was for a rear wiper, but that still worked, in fact everything still does (AFAIK) without a fuse 18. Bizarre.
Earlier, I had the drivers parcel out and there was all manner of alarming activity there, if you excuse the pun. The aftermarket alarm was indeed connected to the ignition barrel. There seemed to be a lot of "activity" around the fuse box as well. The motion sensors did not work but the ignition alarm did. We replaced the (2nd) alarm led but then realised it pulsed all the time, so I disconnected it - now disconnected it still does a very faint pulse! LEDs can't just light up!
I did consider the boot wiring, I had replaced that during the last year and seen as it was on the official fuse 18 circuit I considered having another look to see how the repair was fairing.
The one thing that I have yet to get working any of the diagnostics, I had it working before but now it wont connect to any of the controllers. Does the diagnostics have a fuse? I am talking about Engine ECU, Airbag ECU, ABS and Immobilizer. Thanks |

Thanks again. I disconnected the battery overnight, and rand the diagnostics again and cleared the codes. I got an airbag code, (and this time) some immobiliser codes - anyway all seems well again. Thanks for the support. |
