I was very pleased with the progress I made with the wheels at Phil's over the weekend. I bought them having been degreased and rubbed down quickly once. Having the time to work uninterrupted on them combined with the help of Coupesteve was brilliant Very Happy

First off we rubbed them all down front and back with 400 grade wet and dry paper. It became apparent that two of them were worse than the other two, so it was these we concentrated our efforts on initially. Although the coarser paper I had used earlier had removed the majority of the kerbing I was unsure how to deal with what was left. Jas recommended some primer filler from Halfords which I bought with me, and I also had some chemical metal filler. I decided that I would try with the filler primer initially to see how I got on, so the two worst wheels were given three or four coats as thick as I could without the paint running:

After about an hour of drying time it became apparent that they would be nowhere near dry enough to rub down that evening, and as I had only a third of the filler primer left we made the decision to spray just the rims of the other two wheels as they were less damaged:

I was unsure how effective this filler primer was going to be, but until I was able to rub them down I wouldn't know, so there was little more we could that day. So we had beer and a barbeque 2 man down

The next day the filler primer appeared to have gone off nice and hard so we rubbed them all down with some 1200 paper. I was very impressed with how well they had come Very Happy The two 'better' of the four wheels looked virtually perfect, and the filler primer had removed 90% of the marks from the other two, but it was obvious a second coat was required. As I had no more filler primer with me we made the decision to spray grey primer onto the 'better' two:

So we left with two wheels in primer and two wheels fully prepared awaiting a second application of filler primer:

Many thanks to everyone who offered advice from their own previous experiences, and I hope someone else has also learnt something from this besides me!

Thanks Jas Cool

I rubbed down the two primered wheels with 1200 paper today and they came really smooth I was very impressed Very Happy There are two small marks, one on each wheel which I have spot treated with some filler primer. Bit of a pain but worth doing now or I will always regret it Rolling Eyes

As it appears Septembers weather is continuing on from where Augusts left off I built a mini spray booth in my shed which proved invaluable today:

Tomorrow will involve rubbing the final filler primer coats down with 1200 and getting a first coat of grey primer on two wheels, and a second and final primer coat on the other two. I will then rub down with 1200 paper for a final time before the top coat. I have decided I am going to save my Audi Avus paint for the wheel faces as I have only got 3 cans, and will use Halfords silver wheel paint (and lacquer if I need to) inside the wheels where it's less critical.

Overall I am really pleased with progress so far Cool

I've just seen this thread and i'm impressed with how the wheels are coming along.
I didnt get to see how further you got on the sunday as i was busy doing stuff for Phil and you'd packed up by the time i came back down.

I can see why you only want to do the job once, all the prep work will definitely be worth it I think. Wink

Looking forward to seeing them finished and on your car too.

cheers
Darryl

Cheers Darryl Cool

I am in no real hurry to finish them so it's nice to have the time available to do the job slow time and not rush them! I currently have two wheels fully primered awaiting a quick rub down before top coat, and two wheel awaiting their second and final primer coat.

Even with my make shift spray booth the weather has been too bad to even think about paintwork Sad

I have bought some Simonez silver alloy paint which is a pretty good match for the original Avus colour, which I will use to do the inside saving the Avus for the faces. I'm working the weekend but hopefully Monday will see more progress Wink

All four wheels have had a good few days baking in the conservatory (when the suns out anyway Rolling Eyes ) for the primer to dry properly.

So tonight I rubbed two of them down with 1500 wet and dry paper:

I am pretty pleased with how smooth they are, but since reading 86style's post in Owens Speedline refurb thread am worried they are now too smooth Confused I'm sure they are fine and will get some top coat on a couple of them over the weekend, so if anyone knows otherwise speak now or forever hold your peace!!

It's very different when your applying primer and paint before the lacquer, as opposed to Owens polished rims, The lacquer binds really well with paint, even upto about 2000 on the wetndry Wink

Its a slow and time consuming job this! Will be worth it I'm sure Wink Today was a cracking day so I managed to get two good coats of the Halfords silver top coat on the inside of two of the wheels. According to the cap its a slightly different shade to the Avus colour but that won't matter for the insides. The finished shade may be a better match as idon't know how accurate the colour match to the cap is Confused

As can be seen I wasn't the only one enjoying the sunshine Laughing I sprayed them in the shed but after 15 minutes left them out in the sun which was surprisingly hot so hopefully that will help 'bake' them dry a little.

Hoping it's nice tomorrow so I can get the back of the second pair of wheels sprayed and hopefully a thin coat of Halfords silver on the faces prior to the top coat with the Audi stuff.

I love this weather Cool

The backs of all four wheels have had two coats of top coat now, and the fronts have had a light coat to cover the primer prior to applying the Avus colour. I am really pleased with how they look Very Happy There are a couple of small imperfections which is a pain as I shall have to sort them out or I will live to regret it Rolling Eyes

Sorry about the feet Embarassed

I think they look really good in the conservatory, and it bakes the paint a treat Wink But not all family members feel the same Laughing

I think for an additional 7 I will buy another can of silver paint to put on prior to using the Avus colour, hopefully a good thick layer will help protect them more prior to lacquering.

Three of the four wheels have now received two good coats of silver paint and I have flatted them back with 1500 paper and they are ready for the Audi top coat. I am very happy with how they look Very Happy I was tempted to try and spray them today, but the weather wasn't great, and I was a bit short of time so I decided to wait till all four are ready and the weather is perfect(ish) to give myself the best chance getting a good finish, I have been so thorough with I don't want to rush it now Rolling Eyes

One of the wheels had quite a chip in the spokes and I was pretty sure i had filled it sufficiently but as soon as the shiny stuff went on it stuck out Evil or Very Mad so I had to rethink! I sprayed some filler primer into the can lid and used a little brush to dab it onto the chip. I did this ten or so time allowing 10 mins between until i had built up sufficient to ensure it was definately going to work! I then gave it 24 hours to thoroughly dry and rubbed it back with 1500 paper. Pic below shows it has come good and with the top coat on still looks good:

I only sprayed it this afternoon so need to allow the paint to fully dry before I flat it back. And now I start a run of five night shifts so won't be doing much more this week Rolling Eyes

Cracking job so far James but you don't want to be spraying on a cold day. Don't leave it too much longer...Take a 'sicky' if you have to Wink Laughing

First day off all week today, well worked last night anyway Confused so thought I would make use of the continuing sunshine Cool

I thought I had prepared the wheels pretty well, but after looking at them outside it was amazing how many small imperfections became visible in the sunshine Evil or Very Mad But better to find out now! I thought they looked very good on the Halfords silver paint and was considering not using the Audi paint. But I am so glad I did! Wow! Firstly the paint sprayed really well, there was none of the 'spluttering' as with the cheaper paint which made for a much easier application. But secondly, and more importantly was the look, being metallic the depth of colour was brilliant with the 'speckly' bits giving them a really good look Very Happy This was hard to capture in a photo but I tried!

I am hoping tomorrow to start getting some lacquer on the backs of the wheels. Dead worried about scratching the fronts though Shocked

I have been lacquering Cool I have only done the backs so far and just using Halfords High Gloss lacquer. I positioned the wheels upright to avoid damaging the fronts and as I sprayed them I rolled them along the shed floor to make sure all areas were covered. I gave them a good first coat and then a second one 15 minutes later when it was touch dry. They were then oven-baked in the conservatory Laughing With all windows closed it was surprisingly hot!! To make double sure the backs are as tough as possible I repeated the proceedure today:

I am quite impressed with how they have come considering that although I rubbed down and primed the inside the preperation was nowhere near as thorough as the faces of the wheels. So just a coat of lacquer on the faces to go Very Happy The make or break bit!!! I am on track to have these fitted for ADI as long as the weather holds for one more day next week Cool
