Hi, I have an Audi 80 sports 2.0 SE with an electrical problem. Three days ago the car was running perfectly when suddenly there was a chattering noise from behind the dash (RHS, where the relays are) and the engine cut out. I tried to re-start but on turning the key there was no response even though the ignition/warning lights came on as normal. I kept trying the key and it decided to start but for the next couple of miles kept doing the same thing, then worked perfectly for the next 50 miles. Yesterday morning the car wouldn't start at all, but later in the day it did! Whether coincidental or not the central locking started playing up a couple of months ago, working when it felt like it. It hadn't worked for about a week prior to the cutting out problem, yet worked when the car wouldn't start that morning and didn't work when it started later. When the ignition is switched all the correct lights are illuminated but on turning the key there's just a click from behind the dash..........but sometimes it starts normally! Any advice greatly appreciated. Many thanks, chris.

is your engine the 2.0l 8v ABK, if it is this could be the infamous relay 30, its the relay thats for the ECU that is well known for causing intermitent start/running problems. if you search the forum for "relay 30" or search on the web theres loads of info, i got a new relay from eurocarparts for under a tenner, possible fuel pump relay playing up

It is the ABK engine, thanks for your advice! Do you know if 'relay 30' is in the bank under the bonnett or one of those behind behind the dash?

under the dash, if that doesn't help then try the ignition switch or fuel pump relay. try posting in your models own forum, someone could have had the same problem and point you in the right direction
