So, just picked up my 2001 A6 1.8T. Noticed the temperature gauge hovering around 70C over about 40 miles of mixed A road and motorway. What are these engines designed to sit at? Seemed low to me, and the fuel gauge dropped more than expected - is my thermostat stuck open?

it sounds like the thermostat. I had to renew mine on both my 80 tdi and my A4 1.8 avant, for the same reason, I normally buy genuine ones for the little extra that they cost.
