I'm doing a bit of research on behalf of the Audi Owners Club and I could really do with some help from all the Audi drivers out there.
I'm trying to gauge what a "Reasonably priced service" would cost,
and
"What sort of level of service would you expect to receive at that price".
I have used Audi Main Dealers, Local Independent Specialist's and a Family run Garage to have work done on my car. I have paid different prices for a fairly standard level of service. In all cases the standard has been very good, but my experience is very limited and this is where you can help.
Can you send me a PM stating what model and age of the car you have, a small basic list of the sort of work you have had done and what you ended up paying and who did the work. If you then say if the service was good bad or indifferent that would help. If Like me you have taken your car to someone totaly independent for special work, like an engine swap or major tune up etc, I'm not really looking at this sort of info, more the run of the mill, high street garage for standard or repair work.
The information you supply will only be made available to Audi Owners Club Officials. Names will be ommitted from the data sheets as it's purely the data we need and not who had the work done

I'm yet to receive any responses from this, I take it that all our car's are driving fine and we do all our own servicing
Come on peeps, i could really do with some input so I know what sort of price people are paying for standard work on various Audi's. I can phone around garages only so much before I get sussed |

I do most myself as I have found out some garages have never even heard if a 20v 5 cylinder. Yes I know it's mad but a local audi garage to myself said "ohh audi never did a 90 maybe it's a 80" I mean come on is this the way to go...
Prices range from 50 per hour labour to about 120, I even asked a local garage to replace the bomb on the 90 and they said they had never done any work on a 5cylinder audi before. |

My local place charge £45/ hour (only just gone up from £37.50)
It costs me about £100 ish labour for a 9k service.
And £1k to swap an engine, but hopefully I won't need that again |

£150 for a 12month service/inspection all in.
From my local specialists.
I do all other servicing, ie plugs when needed, 5k oil changes, clean the K&N etc etc.
I usually get the 12month service/inspection around MOT time.
My S2 mileage is now low enough not to need more major services throughout the year, so one stamp per annum is good enough.
(last oil change was done at a 2100 mile interval ) |

2100 miles between oil services, crikey. I try and do mine every 6k.
As you got a couple of Audi's Jas, I assume your talking about the S2 for the service & inspection?
My regular garage charge about £65 p/hr and they will source OEM parts if requested or they will fit parts that I supply. The owner is a massive BMW fan but does appreciate the Audi's, more because of the German link I think But to be honest, until I am confident enough to do more on my own, there is only one man I would go to for my car's needs and that the Ole Nogsports. Best service I have experienced, best prices I have paid and quality of work is not questionable

This isn't, sadly, the first time I've heard of something like this. Many garages are too used to seeing the usual 4 or even 6 cyclinder engines to know of or even understand the 5 cyl's. I have also heard of someone going into a dealerships looking to get a part for his S2 and sales guy said "I didn't think they do one of them" |

Three Audi's now, well until I sell the old Soot monster.
I'm a stickler for history with a car.
I like a history full of receipts rather than a stamped service book. I've seen dealer stamps on ebay
But seeing as the S2 came with the service book stamped and up to date, I've maintained that. I've only got two spaces left in the "second" service book. So it's gets it's annual service/inspection and then stamped.
Everything else I buy during the year, every last single receipt goes in the history file (I have twelve A4 folders)
Just had the book stamped for it's cambelt, headgasket etc.
I have a printed spreadsheet for it's oil/filter changes with mileage.
The 80 TDi didn't have an up to date service book, so I've not kept it up. Just added receipts to it's file. I try and do as much as I can with the TDi, it was after all, a budget work hack.
The new car is the same. it's service book stopped getting stamps three odd years ago, so I'll not bother. Just add to it's receipts. |

I had the parts guy at Wearside Audi (Sunderland) ague like hell with me, trying to tell me I had a "sporty" A2
Lukily, Teeside Audi (Stockton) know exactly what one is, and even better, they love em.
But then it's not often I go direct with Audi anymore, I tend to order through my local specialist who get parts from TPS for me at cost. |

He's only had the car 6 months
I thought I was bit too keen on keeping history, I too have receipts for almost everything i buy, but I forgot to include the one for the bulbs i bought recently I do keep a running spreadsheet of what I do to the car and any servicing etc costs the lot. It got to the point where I was getting shocked at how much I had spent on the car, S/S Exhaust, upgraded parts etc etc etc, that I had to insert lots of rows to push the total down a few pages so I wouldn't see it. I have 1 A4 Folder for my A4 But 12 A4 Folders! You win |

Both would be things I would like to see when I buy a car but never do You end up trawling through dogeared, screwed up pieces of paper trying to deciver handwriting and the such. It was my reason for doing it properly for this car, for the first time I might add |

Tried using my local Audi dealer - they charge £110 an hour. I booked in for a standard service - oil, coolant, PAS all topped up. The service I recieved was OK, but I think that I got horrendously overcharged, especially for the PAS fluid - if I recall correctly it was something in the order of £12 to top up the fluid from halfway empty to full. Probably won't use the main dealer again unless there's something major needs doing and Genuine Audi parts are required.
Using an independent, I just paid £350 all in for a clutch replacement (includes parts and labour, plus a ride to and from the garage - something the Audi dealer didn't offer me). They also advised that my front brake discs could probably do with looking soon, but advised that it wasn't a major thing that had to be done right now. The job took all day (but I was expecting that) and service I got was spot on. Price was spot on the quote, and there was no fuss.
The independent have also quoted £350 all in for the cambelt change (I'm on 154,000 miles at the moment, so it's due soon), whereas the main Audi dealer quoted £500 all in - considering the age and mileage of my car, I don't think they'll get this work.
Will most likely use the independent again for the cambelt change, but will probably only use the main Audi dealer for parts.

Picked the car up today. It was a longlife service with a brake fluid change.
Can't complain although I'd best not start broadcasting. |

Thanks The_Wire, there is some good info in that post that will help me loads Big difference on the cambelt servicing, I wonder if they both cover the same level of service? Some quote for just all belts whereas others might include tensioners and again others might also include the water pump too! It's not common to include the water pump, but i would always replace it as a metter of course when doing the belts.
Mike, I take it you were happy enough with the overall service then? Did they offer the service to you as a fixed price job or did you get charged by the hour?

Negotiated a deal up front. All parts were discounted and the oil was consumed from 2 x 5 litre containers rather than the normal 0.5 litre chargeable amounts and they used a discounted rate for the service itself.
The normal price for the basic service would have been £695.
More than happy. Even got a lift home when the car was delayed and they dropped the car off at the house on Friday. Went back today to pay the bill when picking up parts. |

Right. Got my car with 115K on the clock. At 120K timing belt needed doing. I went to All Audi in Bristol for a big service, timing belt, tensioner, waterpump, oil and filter. They quoted just over 400 for that. phoned later to say the tensioner for the other belt which drives the alternator also had to be replaced (125 pounds for the part) and the radiator needed replacing (another 60 pounds). Futher I had a drive shaft gaiter replaced. All in all a big job for just under 900 pounds, half of which was parts/fluids. They had the car for 2 days so probably around 30 pounds per hr labour. Got a loan car and overall I was very happy.
For my MOT I am going to the same local test station for the last 12 years, the guy knows me and has never failed my car for something that was not required. I go there for my oil changes, which they charge 70 pounds for.
Lately had some work done there, driveshaft and thermostat, came in just under 300 pounds. I think he charges 40 pounds an hr. Good local service at the right price with a personal touch.
Only ever been to Audi once, to get my key programmed. Half hr labour, 50 pounds. They later phoned up to do some market research and asked if I would come back for service, well not for 100 pounds/hr...

Crouchie, my cabriolet is going in tomorrow for a service and MOT, using the same guy who looks after my daily driver, for which I am entirely happy, good service at a good price and the car always feels right when it's been to Freeborns, so will let you know how we get on tomorrow. |

We charge £32 hour.
Oil change service is around £40 - £50 all in, but that does depend on oil.
We are happy to fit customers own parts.
Our MOT fee is £47.50 (Arrangement only at present)
We recently fittd discs and pads all round on a Honda CRV, the parts bill was £132, the Labour was around £55 IIRC, Honda wanted £362 + VAT, we also fitted OE Honda parts.
We use TPS for almost everything, especially consumables, they do around three deliveries a day if needed so genuine parts are only a few hours away, reasonable discount on stock items too. We stock a range of common use filters and oils etc..
Our labour charge is the cheapest in the area by around a fiver an hour, the most expensive independant garage is 6 miles away and charges £49 olus VAT.
Warners Peugeot/Citroen are main dealers 8 miles away, they charge around £84 per hour, but are usually flat out day in/out.

about this time last year when I still had my workshop I was charging £35.00 per hour but usually gave more time than I charged for.. Customers and anyone that's not worked in the industry, or for themselves don't really appreciate the costs today.
The problem now is covering all the costs that you incur before you make anything. for instance rent or purchase of premises, business rates about £1500 a year for a small unit and that's with the 50% small business reduction. You have, elc / gas, insurance, building contents, & public liability, and to cover driving customers cars, and the myriad of tooling above and beyond standard spanners sockets etc, some of it hugely expensive, (especially diagnostics), you need to have to work on most of the cars produced in the past 20 years..
And on top of that if you have the bare faced audacity to actually want to employ anyone else there is a whole raft of hoops you have to jump through involving yet vastly more expense... |

Blade, it will always be the same, all customers want something for nothing, even business owners, who know the ropes/costs of running your own little empire will try and screw you down to 0% profit and they are sometimes the worst.......Don't get me started on Business Rates, NICO and Income Tax, The Government don't expect you to live and lord forbid if you even think of expanding your business.... |

Those are very good rates there Si I think most Garages these day's would struggle to beat that.
The whole point of this excersise really is to try and find out what folk are generally paying out there. The idea is then to ask you, what WOULD you pay for the work you have had done if you could name a price? I'm hoping you will be reasonable in your wants as I will then take my findings back to Tonbridge Audi and ask how far their willing to match these prices, at the same time I can show them how resourceful us Audi onwers can be.
I buy 10 litres of high grade oil (Silkolene Pro S 5w-40), and pay around £63 +VAT. (10 litres as I have a six litre sump, plus for spare. An OEM oil filter last time out cost me £7.70. Then there is my time spent doing it. If Audi offered me a Discounted Fixed Price Oil Service for £50, I would most likely take my car to their service centre! Plus i would have the stamp in the book
It would be difficult for me to justify a price on a Full service as I have a cleanable performance panel airfilter, Uprated spark plugs and leads too so when they need replacing I would have to source and fit them myself. Being able to get a discount on Fluids and other regular servicable items would be handy too, but again I have uprated my brakes a bit so it would be difficult again to suggest a price for those. Most of the other work I do to the car is upgrades, talking of which I'll be ordering my Poly bushes next week
So, What would you like to pay for servicing? If you could ask for a discount from Audi, How much would you ask for? |
