I just changed the thermostat in my audi, and the timing belt popped off. i put it all back on the marks with the crank mark lined up, and the cams lined up. I do not have the special tool to hold it in place, but old marks on the pulleys match up. everything looks like it should, but now the car will not start. It seems like it wants to start, but just wont. The car ran great before. all this trouble over a thermostat. Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong. This is my first audi, and I have never had so much trouble timing a car before.

3rd cylinder needs to be at TDC when the timing marks are aligned.

the #3 cylinder is tdc. that is what is confusing me. i am wondering if the cams spun 180 on me or something weird like that. first time working on a dual cam setup like this. always had single cam v8 before

If you've followed these steps and all is correct and there is still a no start situation then there might be no signal from the crank, cam or gearbox speed sensor, check they are plugged in.

It's also necessary to pull the cam sprockets off the tapered ends of the cams once they have been aligned otherwise there is the possibility the timing will be out.
