Just thought I would pass this on...

Went to the Whites main dealer in Camberly on Friday as I am beginning to think about changing the car, I'm interested in an A6 2.5TDi Q avant. I had a quick chat with a sales rep and said that I would be interested in px my A4 and asked for an estimate. The sort of price range of used car that I said I might be interested in was £15-20,000. He came out with his check list and had a good look. My A4 TDi is '95, done £120,000 miles - a bit old and mileage high (but given its a diesel not so much of a big deal) I have kept it in good nick, cam belt replaced 4,000 miles ago, new front link kit, full Ash untill I got it just over a year ago. I had a little look on the Parkers web site to get an idea of price - for trade they suggest £3573. He went away to speak to the manager (as they always do) and came back and hit me with, wait for it - - £1600 Crying or Very sad . Unbeliveable, I knew that initial offers would be low and that if I were serious I could bargain up, but even as an inital offer I could not believe it - I could sell privately and get £4500 odd for it. They clearly are not interested in my buisiness....

That's just their initial negotiating position, and if you let them know you're serious about spending 15 thou with them they should be willing to go higher. There are reports in the papers about 2nd hand prices taking a tumble at the moment. I'm not surprised a dealer is showing his nervousness at taking in a nearly 10 year old though, he probably couldn't sell it through his forecourt. Go back and try for a better offer if you're really serious. Very Happy Have you actually seen cars around in similar condition to yours for 4500?

Dont bother with the main dealers, you`re paying for their air conditioned offices. They want max profit both on your var and theirs, sell yours private and then try and buy one private or specialist supplier you should end up around 5K up on the deal, thats 5K the main dealer isn`t getting their hands on and 5k you can splash out on an AA check, a nice holiday in the sun and a pint of lager for me. All the best Evil or Very Mad
