hi guys,
been to look at a UR today '86,digi dash, cloth interior, mechanically spot on, 170k but recent rebuild by john read, all new brakes, suspension etc etc.
its suffering a bit in the bodywork dept, rust on the sills/arches the usual stuff not critical yet but needs doing.
what sort of money would you put on the car with this limited info?
also any recommendations for getting the bodywork sorted, who, where, how much?
many thanks |

Putting a value on such a car is almost impossible. It's up to you to decide how much you are prepared to pay.
Personal view is that the ur-q is vastly overrated and a 17 year old car will need work no matter how good it is. With the current parts crisis, you would be well advised to get an expert inspection. The quattro owners club can help with this.
One question which is very significant, did the voice synthesiser work ? If not walk away |

THINGS YOU NEED TO LOOK AT ARE ANY OR ALL BILLS THAT CAN VALIDATE THE WORK SUPPOSADLY DONE, MECHANICALLY MOST PARTS ARE AVALIABLE BUT AT A PRICE AND THESE ARE NOT YOUR NORMAL NUT AND BOLT CAR FROM THE EIGHTIES.( THEY WERE WELL ADVANCED FOR THEIR TIME AND ARE STILLA RELATIVLEY COMPLECATED CAR)
BODY WORK WILL BE AN ISSUE WITH A CAR OF THIS AGE AS I HAVE LEARNT MYSELF (BOTH FRONT WINGS, O/S REAR 1/4 PANEL AND SILL)
DOORS,BONNET AND TAILGATE ARE AS COUPE GT AND RELATIVLEY INEXPENSIVE AS THESE ARE STILL AVALIBLE AT MANY BREAKERS YARDS BUT ALL OTHER PANELS ARE PURE TURBO AND WILL HAVE TO COME FROM VAG - AND THEY KNOW HOW TO CHARGE !!
ELECTRONICS ARE NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED AND REALLY UNLESS YOUR QUALIFIED NOT FOR THE AMATURE.
ALL OF THIS SOUNDS VERY DEPRESSING BUT ITS NOT, AND IF YOU BIDE YOUR TIME AND LOOK AT PLENTY OF CARS THEN YOU'LL HAVE ALOT LESS TIME IN THE GARAGE AND ALOT MORE SPARE CASH IN THE BANK.
IF YOU THINK YOUVE FOUND THE CAR FOR YOU THEN LOOK UP WHO IS POSSIBLY YOUR NEAREST QUATTRO SPECIALIST SUCH AS DIALYNX, A.M CARS ETC AS AN UNDERSTANDING VENDOR WILL APPRECIATE WHERE YOUR COMING FROM. ( AM M.O.T OR MECHANICAL APPRAISAL WILL TELL YOU MOST THINGS)
A SITE WELL WORTH CHECKING OUT IS THE BUYERS GUIDE BY PHIL PAYNE (QUATTRO GURU) - WWW.ISHAM-RESEARCH.COM
GOOD LOOK WITH THE HUNT

Or you could post your concerns to Phil Payne who will give the car a fine toothcomb inspection and guide you on cost. He can be contacted at www.quattroforum.com
If it helps I had a 1st class bodyshop (and when I say 1st class ive seen and experienced their work) for a quote on my MB. New bonnet offside front wing and offside rear sill attention all glass out and external furniture - £6000 I know the car bodywork then will last yet another 14 years. This Co. prepared a car for the Festival of Speed with "jaw dropping surprise" on the owners face when he picked it up |

Its not how much the car is worth, its how much you are prepared to spend on it.I tend to work the other way round to most people, most tend to look for the best car they can find or afford.I always buy cars when they are rough (at the right price). That way i tend to avoid cars which have been tarted up and need as much money again spent on them just to put all the botching right.Honest rust is not too much of a problem as it can be cut out or the panel replaced. The main thing to avoid is bad accident damage that has been poorly repaired as the car will never be any good.I would be very carefull with cars in the £3000-£5000 price range as this can be a minefield (cracked manifolds, gearbox problems, quick resprays). As for the rot spots check the bottom of the windscreen pillers, boot corners, sills, front wings, rear arches.boot lid hinge panel and the sunroof area. That will give you something to go on. |
