Not a project as such, but I thought I'd show you my journal that I've been running on another forum.

Picked this up on Thursday (July 2010) and instantly fell in love.

Excellent condition throughout and not a spot of rust on it's galvanized body. Electric windows and wing mirrors, and mint condition leather interior which matches the body colour.

Drilled discs up front, green stuff pads, new front calipers and hoses as well. Not what I would have picked, but it stops excellently! Sporty but subtle exhaust system sounds amazing.

The engine is spot-on, smooth and grunty for an old 8v lump. Book figures state it should be 115bhp, but it's noticably faster than my old 16v which was supposed to be 140bhp from the factory. It feels torquier low down, but doesn't offer much in the upper rev range.

Yet to receive it's first wash, so my apologies for the state of it in the pictures!

Forgot to say, wheels were refurbished this year, so there's not a mark on them! I'm sure the roads in the north east of Scotland will soon change that though Sad

Nothing much until September when I fitted new plates from the Audi dealership I worked at.

Oct 13th 2010:

Uprated dash speakers to replace the poor originals. These fit behind the existing grilles, so you won't see a cosmetic change, but have been recommended to give an excellent value for money upgrade (by audifans.net).

The latest news is that the o/s handbrake has stuck on twice in the last week. It's due into work on Saturday to diagnose whether it's the caliper or the handbrake cable, so hopefully it'll get sorted this weekend.

October 15th 2010:

Got the car up on the ramps after work today as my mate can't manage tomorrow. Caliper was stuck on but the cable was moving freely. Obviously it was going to be the most expensive part that was fcuked. We replaced the caliper there and then since I'd ordered in both the cable and caliper Smile Working fine now, although the brakes will be re-bled tomorrow as they're not-quite-right.
Andrzej (my Audi mechanic friend) highlighted a corroded fuel line and that the timing belt hasn't been changed in a while. so we'll be addressing these shortly!!

This arrived today:

Oct 16th:

I did stuff today!

I removed the original Clarion head unit and fitted my Kenwood KDC-W4044UG. It was dead to the world I checked the wiring and although the original leads fitted fine, the connections were in the wrong place. So I went to Halfords......
I then came home to get my wallet (facepalm) and went back to Halfords to pay for my ISO harness. Plugged it all together and it's working fine. Even on stock speakers it seemed much sharper and clearer Smile

Inspired by this, I decided to have a crack at fitting the uprated dash speakers today as well. I've never touched ICE in a car, so this was new, potentially disasterous ground for me, but a great guide on Audi Fans dot net made it look fairly straight-forward, so I removed the grille:

The speaker is held in by a single screw so easy enough to remove. I made some money out of the job, which is a boost!

You need to remove 2 of the lugs on the new speakers (Pioneer TS-G1012I) in order for them to fit in the original hole without destroying your dash. I just bent them back and forth until they snapped off, then slotted the speaker in place and screwed it in:

I then refitted the grille:

5-10 minutes per side, keeping the OE looks, and the difference is like night and day! Quite a modest little set-up, but in comparison to the dates originals, I'm delighted with the transformation that cost a grand total of just under £80 for speakers (new) and headunit (used, but mint).

Lol, here is my caliper that was fitted yesterday...

Nothing in the way of updates today, but I found the pics from the original ad for the car.

Oct 23rd:

Picked these up today. FLI seem right at the cheap end of the market, but they get good reviews and the speakers seem well made. I guess I'll find out once they're in though

Oct 29th:

Speakers still are not fitted.

Had a half day today in order to take advantage of the Gears of War 2 31x XP event (facepalm), so went to fit the clear side repeaters. They were ebay specials since you don't get genuine ones, and they both snapped when trying to fit. Have ordered some more which look a bit better quality :-\

Tow eye cover arrived and has been fitted, so looks a bit nicer.

November 12th:

Expensive day for the ol' Kingfisher beautiy.

I'm £215 (that's cost price!) ligther after getting 4 Vredestein Quatrac 3 fitted at work today. I ended up having to go for a narrower tyre, 195/65 15H, rather than the 205/60 15V which are normally fitted. I wasn't able to source 205's ANYWHERE. It's no bad thing getting a slightly narrower tyre for the winter anyway.

I've ordered a used replacement set of gauges since the old ones are a bit worn and the oil temp one doesn't work:

I've changed the side repeaters on the car to clear rather than the blue tints, and I've sourced all of the parts that I'll need to overhaul the damp part of piping between my fuel tank and filter. As always, every nut bolt and bracket is brand new dealer parts:

Sadly, that's about £113 of parts sitting there Neutral

I'll hopefully get some more photos of the car up soon, but I'll need to give it a wash as it's looking like it's just done a World Rally stage at the moment, haha.

Jan 28th 2011:

No updates since the last post, however:

I've fitted the set of dials pictured above. They look a lot nicer (they're mint) than the old ones, but one is still dead to the world. I've put this down to the 'illumination booster' behind the gauges, which is a little relay looking thing. I should be able to get one pretty cheap, and it's a DIY job (if you're able to remove the centre console and gauges).

Tomorrow the car goes into the garage for some special treatment from my friend Andrzej. Time allowing, it should get:

- A new accelerator pedal. The rubber fell of mine this week, when I wasn't even in the car (!!). Apparently it's a common thing on old Audis - the pedal rubber/plastic comes off of the pedal, and you have to buy the whole lot! £60 dealer only part :-\
- Oil change (£4 filter - free oil ).
- Diagnoses of the slight pull to the left. Likely a wishbone bush, similar to Escorts.
- New oil temp sender (£15 from the dealer).
- ABS diagnosis. My ABS light came on about 3 months ago when I hit (ahem) three figures. It went off after I restarted the car, but since then the n/s left wheel sometimes makes a pumping/clicking sound when coming to a stop, and you hear the ABS pump working. I did a trip to see family last week, and hit a decent speed, and again the ABS light came on until the car was restarted. Andrzej thinks it's just a dirty ABS ring, so should be quick and easy to sort out.
- All of the fuel system parts pictures above are due to be fitted.

Quite a day for my Polish hero, if he manages it!

Going forward. It needs a new timing belt kit and drive belt. The water pump might as well be done while it's in pieces. It could also do with gear linkage shaft oil seals being replaced as there's a slight drip.

That might be a month or so away though.

Jan 29th:

Just back from the garage now. Got the oil changed and the fuel lines done (this looked a royal pain in the ass of a job). My mate removed the rear hub and cleaned the ABS ring which was coated in muck. I'm not sure if this has resolved the issue though (I need to pick up the right connector to check the fault codes as the VAS machines at work only have connectors for ODBII).

After standing putting £20 of V-Power in (not even 1/4 a fcuking tank at these prices!!) I took it for a wee drive and the car feels fantastic. The old fuel filter looked a good few years old, so maybe this was causing an issue, but it feels a bit nippier The old 8v is so much nicer to drive and has a lovely torque curve when compared to the 16v Coupe I had before I can't recommend these cars highly enough to anyone/everyone, as they can be had for Escort money.

I'll fit the accelerator pedal myself this week since it's only a Haynes 1 spanner job and we ran out of time today.

I'll also need a CV boot kit as the n/s front one has split and covered just about everything within a 12" radius in grease Sad

This arrived and was fitted today. Seems to have more urgency within the power band and gives a smoother ride through the gears.

How much of this is down to K&N being better than O.E. and how much is down to the old filter being filthy and due for replacement, is open to debate. Very happy overall though Smile

A word of advice when buying aftermarket panel filters is to go by the O.E. part number for your existing filter. After not being convinced by the dimensions of the filters that K&N, eurocarparts and sellers on ebay were recommending, I went by the part number I had from ETKA.
All of the above said this part number was only for Audi S2 models, but I went with it anyway. Obviously it's the right one Smile

Went in this morning for it's timing belt, drive belt, PAS belt, tensioner, dampner, water pump, radiator and some lovely G12 coolant. Pics are poop as they're from my phone and I was wary about looking like a bit of a gimp taking photos in the garage.

Radiator out and aux belts off:

Water pump out:

Water pump in:

New belt, tensioner and dampner (stupid design):

All done Very Happy:

MOT next Wednesday (25th May), so took it to my friend to replace the CV boot and get his opinion on whether the top mount could sneak through an MOT.

Turns out what I thought was a top mount knocking was actually the lower ball joint loose in the hub! After some tightening to the securing bolt, there's no play at all Very Happy

CV boot getting done:

You don't normally have to remove the driveshaft to do this job, but due to some over-enthusiastic hammering when trying to seperate the hub and ball joint, the inner CV joint needed rebuilding (facepalm).

Shouldn't fail on too much on Wednesday.

Treble fail:

1 - Offside headlamp aim too high
2 - Offside front CV joint gaiter insecurely mounted to it's housing (this isn't the one that was replaced)
3 - Nearsided front suspension arm has excessive play in a pin/bush

£100-ish of parts today (only half will be needed to get it back on the road):

Genuine outer CV boot clip and borrowed proper tools to fit it. If I recall correctly, the boot that failed is secured by a jubilee clip rather than the proper clip. Mega-picky fail if that's all it is.

Pattern arm and genuine new nuts and bolts. Went pattern as I'll most likely polly-bush the front when I renew the other arm over the summer, so the quality of the bushing isn't too important.

Genuine rocker cover clamps and bolts for when I change the rocker gasket.

Genuine cat to system exhaust nuts, bolts, springs and gasket for when I replace the whole system later this year. The old ones will not come off looking nice!

Genuine 314mm discs for a possible future conversion:

Early A4 brake/hub/bearing set-up for if I decide to go 5-stud:

Genuine rear ABS rings and gubbins for the back 'hub':

Standard brakes to tide me over until I do an upgrade:

I bought spare struts which are currently away being power coated. This way I can build up the front struts with new shocks and springs just to do a straight swap for the current complete unit:

Genuine Audi S2/RS2 ellipsoid lights:

The comparison doesn't show it because of the sun and my mad photo skillz but the difference is massive. Worth every penny Very Happy

Bulbs:

A plug for the eBay store that sold them - http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Auto-Performance-...sid=p4340.l2563 - delivered inside 24 hours, came with 4 free ice blue sidelight bulbs and as mentioned they sent me the Plus rather than the regular Smile

One fitted:

Main beam:

Full beam:

Both fitted:

Hi, nice car you got there, love the colour! I've got an M reg coupe in Tropical Green myself.

I've been thinking about a brake upgrade aswell and possibly even going upto 5 studs, been desperate for bigger alloys but just want to stick to period Audi syle and there ain't anything bigger than the 15s in 4x108. So two questions, what carrier/calipers would you need to match those 314mm discs? and what else would you need to change the front to 5 stud, just a 5 stud flange, what model would that be off?

Also what do you need to change the rear to 5 stud? My car has over flange discs but I see you have bearing-discs, is it just a matter of ditching the 4 stud flange and these A4s discs slip on?

Cheers
Stuart

Hello mate, a lot of my info came from Bikerjim's conversion (he should have a thread on here, but the one on s2forum is more detailed, and translating this page - http://www.audifieber.de/audiforum/threads/409-B4-Typ-89-S2-Bremse-VA-umgebaut-ATE57-314x25-P-P.

The calipers and carriers are from the VW range and appear on a number of cars (normally the Passat and TT). The carriers are what cost the most at about £130 used (similar price from the dealers new!. The calipers are about £40 each. Both part numbers are on the website above.

You would need to change to a 5-stud front hub from the Audi S2.

For a rear 5-stud conversion you would need to change to the bearing-in-disc setup of the A4 and ditch your existing hub. The stub axles, calipers and carriers are the same.

I never actually went ahead with the conversion so have the complete rear setup (every nut and bolt, discs, pads ABS rings) for sale, along with the front discs above.
